How to find exercise easy

This site is not about convincing anyone to take exercise …   Rather the Starting Point is in accepting that we need exercise as a ‘given’ … We know we should exercise and we mostly know why …

What this site aims to do is bring you some inventive ways of exercising without ‘busting a gut’ :) … exercise should be FUN!!!

Beware of Injury

Desert YogaMy story on the road to good health has incurred injury, simply because I was exercising in ignorance … and more importantly I was not ‘present’ when I took part …

This is the most important message you’ll find on this site …  Because that’s when injury can occur … and many of us have been there right!

My experience as a newbie to Yoga (Iyengar as it goes) was where my first teacher, seeing I was very flexible (and boy was I proud :) of that) would manipulate and mould me to stretch further and further …

And the Problem Was …

I just didn’t respect my body and realize its limitations … until my back ‘went’ and took 3-mths to recover (the first time) and I had a very interesting conversation with the Physiotherapist, where I learned that flexible people have less sensitivity around their physical limitations and can often extend beyond where they should due to lack of awareness.  On the contrary a less flexible (or stiffer) person will receive quite immediate signals from their body and know immediately when to stop.

And likewise the flexible person takes longer to recover from injury.  I learned this over a period of approximately 5 yrs, and with further study I’m now at a place where I recognize the importance of being engaged with the process while it happens, rather than allowing my mind to wander.

I no longer daydream or think up shopping lists while engaged in an Activity.  And the benefits can be very rewarding as there are clear messages to be found in discovering when some part of you is a little weak and perhaps needs a bit of TLC, or less use at that time and similarly, by listening there is a sense of when it needs to start working again (gently) ..

Seizing Up

The Science

And the science of it lies in the ligaments, connective tissue and fascia that collectively permeate our entire internal network.  Keeping them sweet requires us to move, otherwise they turn against us and we stiffen up, which makes it increasingly difficult to restore flexibility and movement and although not irreversible … the longer we leave it the harder the task becomes.  Of course the key is to find something you enjoy taking part in … and just go for it!
